Heart Based Language - Educating our Global Society Students
COMMON CORE STANDARDS
The Common Core Standards call for deep critical thinking about complex text and complex issues. Two approaches are explored in Carol Prime's presentation: Close Reading and Critical Literacy. Close Reading calls for rereading text, first on one's one for flow and to allow students to independently apply skills that they already possess. The second and third readings require analysis of vocabulary, text structure, and content allowing students to develop academic language and critical thinking. Critical Literacy focuses on deep social issues to increase critical thinking, understanding of the world, developing values, and exploring issues.
