About Dr. Audrey Hokoda

Dr. Audrey Hokoda is an Associate Professor in the Child and Family Development (CFD) Department at San Diego State University (SDSU). The mission of the CFD Department is to prepare students to become early childhood educators and professionals who work with children, families, schools and communities. The focus of the department is on the study of social emotional development as the underlying foundation for all other areas of development, and the department has an emphasis on primary prevention and preparing students with hands-on experiences through community-based learning.
Audrey Hokoda has been the Principal Investigator for over 15 studies and community projects focused on developing, implementing and evaluating youth violence prevention programs. Working with partners at San Diego County Health and Human Services Agency Office of Violence Prevention (OVP), she helped develop and implement two evidence-based prevention programs: a whole-school anti-bullying program run in eight middle schools in the Sweetwater Union High School District, and a teen relationship violence prevention program offered to thousands of adolescents, educators, and youth service providers in the County over the past 8 years. She also developed and implemented a 12-week trauma-informed parenting program for survivors of domestic violence who have children between 6 – 12 years, and worked with staff at the Instituto Nacional de Psiquiatría (INP) in Mexico City and at the Universidad Autónoma de Nuevo León (UANL) in Monterrey, Mexico in adapting curriculum for Spanish-speaking women and adolescents in Mexico. She co-runs a Youth Violence Research Lab at SDSU with Dr. Emilio Ulloa from the Psychology Department, and has published over 20 articles on teen dating violence, bullying, and domestic violence, particularly in Latino and Asian populations.
